This study is an attempt to compare practices of child delivery and related concepts of "assistance" as formulated by traditional midwives in India, classical obstetricians and practitioners of the Japanese seitai. It is based on interviews conducted in India in 1997-98, substantiated by quotes of recent literature advocating "natural" birth attendance.
